Treasurer Pack Announces Nearly $5 Million in Unclaimed Property Funds Returned During April

State Treasurer Larry Pack announced today his Office’s Unclaimed Property Division returned nearly $5 million worth of funds to individuals, businesses and other organizations during the month of April.

“I am proud my Office continues to return unclaimed property funds at the fastest pace in state history,” Treasurer Pack said. “We have already surpassed the $28 million that was returned during Fiscal Year 2024 and are on track to set a new record for annual returns at the close of this Fiscal Year.”

During the month of April, the Unclaimed Property Division returned a total of $4,861,120 paid out across 1,581 claims representing 5,631 individual properties.

Since the fiscal year began on July 1, 2024, the Division has returned more than $35.6 million to rightful owners, which is more than the $28 million that was returned during Fiscal Year 2024.

A monthly record of $8.5 million in unclaimed property was returned in November 2024.

The Office currently has more than $475 million worth of listings in its unclaimed property database.

The Office’s March firearms auction raised more than $132,000 to benefit 18 participating law enforcement agencies across West Virginia and resulted in unclaimed property check presentations at the Bluefield and Bridgeport Police Departments during the month of April.

What is Unclaimed Property?

Unclaimed property can include financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for one year or longer. Common examples include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts and unused rebate cards. (While the title includes the word “property,” it does not however include real estate.)

West Virginia’s unclaimed property laws protect the public by ensuring money and property owed to them is returned to them, rather than remaining permanently with financial institutions, business associations, governments and other entities. The Treasurer seeks to reunite the unclaimed property, including uncashed paychecks, stocks, or safe deposit box contents, with its owner.

Nationwide, nearly 33 million people in the United States – one in every 10 – are estimated to have unclaimed property available for them to claim.
