During a visit to North Central West Virginia on Tuesday, August 5, State Treasurer Larry Pack presented the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, City of Morgantown and Morgantown Board of Parks with unclaimed property checks totaling more than $100,000.
“It’s always a great day when my Office can return this money to our state, our cities and local law enforcement agencies so they can better serve their communities,” Treasurer Pack said.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday received a check valued at $89,500.41. The funds were from miscellaneous checks. These funds will allow the department to purchase necessary equipment including radar units, portable radios, and response team items.
“The awarded money from the Treasurer’s Office is going to be utilized to remain productive and serve the citizens of Marion County,” said Marion County Sheriff Roger Cunningham.
On Tuesday afternoon at the West Virginia Municipal League Annual Conference, Treasurer Pack presented the City of Morgantown and Morgantown Board of Parks with two separate checks. Standing alongside Morgantown Mayor Danielle Trumble and City Manager Jamie Miller, Treasurer Pack presented the City of Morgantown with a check totaling $12,770.31 and Morgantown Parks with a check totaling $7,377.14.
“In a time where local municipalities continue to experience fiscal constraints, it is critical that we continue to be responsible with every dollar in order to continue to provide high quality services to our community,” said Miller. “The City of Morgantown is extremely grateful for the funds identified through the West Virginia Treasurer's Office and the Unclaimed Property program. Staff was able to work with the state to identify and secure these funds. Fiscal stewardship is critical to any community’s strength and sustainability.”
Treasurer Pack recently announced Office’s Unclaimed Property Division broke a record for the highest dollar amount of claims paid during Fiscal Year 2025, which ended on June 30. The Division returned nearly $40.6 million to rightful owners, surpassing the $28 million that was returned to rightful owners during Fiscal Year 2024.
