Treasurer Pack Returns More Than $15,000 in Unclaimed Property from Firearms Auction to Cabell County Sheriff's Office

State Treasurer Larry Pack visited Huntington on Thursday, June 5 to present the Cabell County Sheriff’s Office with an unclaimed property check worth more than $15,000 from his Office’s firearms auction held in March.

“I am thrilled to return this money that will help our local law enforcement agencies better serve their communities,” Treasurer Pack said. “The Cabell County Sheriff’s Office received one of the largest checks and sold 83 firearms during our March 27th firearms auction in Charleston. These include weapons that are older and no longer used by a department, or that have been seized as evidence and sitting in storage rooms for an extended amount of time. These funds will greatly benefit their operations.”

State and local law enforcement agencies are allowed to turn over any unclaimed, seized or outdated firearms in their possession to the Treasurer’s Office for auction. The Cabell County Sheriff’s Office received a check valued at $15,066.25 on Thursday morning.

Cabell County Sheriff Doug Adams said the funding will be used toward firearms training. He said it’s the most money his Office has received from the Treasurer’s Office live firearms auction in years.

“Ammunition costs have gone through the roof and so when you’re training 46 deputies, home confinement and courthouse security through the year, you’ll run through $10,000 easily, so it will be put to good use,” Sheriff Adams said. “It’s a relief to get the guns out of the hands of the criminals that commit crimes with these weapons.”

Treasurer Pack recently announced the March firearms auction raised $132,495 to benefit the 18 participating law enforcement agencies, including the Cabell County Sheriff’s Office. There were 277 lots up for bid consisting of 624 firearms and 700 pounds of ammunition, which made it the largest firearms auction by volume in Office history. In-person auctions are held every six months for federal firearms licensed (FFL) dealers.

Over the last month, Treasurer Pack has returned funds from the March firearms auction to other law enforcement agencies including the Bluefield Police Department, the Bridgeport Police Department, the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wood County Sheriff’s Office.

Since the fiscal year began on July 1, 2024, the Office’s Unclaimed Property Division has returned more than $40 million to rightful owners, surpassing the $28 million that was returned to rightful owners during Fiscal Year 2024.
